Missouri Good Neighbor Week Proclaimed for September 28 to October 4

The City of Lee's Summit has officially proclaimed September 28 to October 4 as Missouri Good Neighbor Week, encouraging residents to participate in intentional acts of kindness toward their neighbors.

During the September 23 City Council meeting, Mayor Bill Baird presented the proclamation, noting that being a good neighbor extends beyond simply "being quiet and keeping to ourselves." Research shows that genuine connections with neighbors create stronger, safer and more vibrant communities.

"In an age where many Americans feel isolated and alone, a simple hello across the fence, a shared meal, or a helping hand can spark connection, ease loneliness, and remind us we belong," Mayor Baird stated during the proclamation reading.

The Human Relations Commission, in partnership with the Cultural Commission and Wellness Commission, is promoting the week-long initiative. Missouri Good Neighbor Week was established by state law in 2022.

Vanessa Hickman, representing the Human Relations Commission, accepted the proclamation and encouraged community participation, specifically highlighting a Tuesday event at Green Street.

"Bring your own meal, we're not doing potluck," Hickman said. "And we can all eat together at Tuesday table."

The proclamation emphasizes that neighborly connections strengthen communities and challenge residents to take "small but powerful steps" to foster belonging.
